Last-mile logistics refers to the final step of the supply chain where a product is transported from a distribution hub, warehouse, or local store to the end customer’s doorstep. It is called “last mile” because it represents the last leg of delivery, even though it is often the shortest in distance, it is usually the most complex and expensive part of logistics. This stage is critical in e-commerce, grocery delivery, and retail because it directly impacts delivery speed, cost, and customer experience. Challenges in last-mile logistics include traffic congestion, failed delivery attempts, high fuel and labor costs, and the need for precise coordination. Companies optimize it using route planning, delivery tracking, local fulfillment centers, and gig-based delivery networks to make deliveries faster and more efficient.

 Why is last-mile delivery more expensive than earlier stages of logistics?

Last-mile delivery is more expensive because it involves multiple individual drop-offs instead of bulk transportation. Each delivery requires time, fuel, and labor for separate addresses, often in congested urban areas. Unlike warehouse or line-haul shipping, routes are less efficient and more fragmented. Additional costs come from failed delivery attempts, real-time tracking systems, customer service support, and the need for fast delivery expectations, especially in e-commerce and on-demand services.

How do companies improve efficiency in last-mile logistics?

Companies improve last-mile efficiency by using technology and smarter delivery models. Route optimization software reduces travel time and fuel usage by planning the best delivery paths. Local warehouses or dark stores bring inventory closer to customers, cutting delivery distance. Real-time tracking helps coordinate drivers and customers, reducing failed deliveries. Many companies also use gig workers or crowdsourced delivery networks to scale flexibly during peak demand periods.
